The DrumBeat
arrow INTRODUCTION

The Drumbeat is a social enterprise project supported by UNLTD. The project is aimed at bridging the gap that exists between service providers and service user within three London boroughs (Barking and Dagenham, Newham and Redbridge).

This venture is being run on a voluntary basis by a group of professional refugees who, besides running The Drumbeat, also run a community group known as Refugee Advisory and Advocacy Project (RAAP).

arrow RAAP

RAAP was started in 2002 to offer support services, mentoring support and advice to refugees and asylum seekers.

RAAP recognises that refugees/immigrants and asylum seekers are a ‘hard to reach group – mainly because of their social makeup in society (this can either be through isolation, language barrier or social exclusion) and are therefore excluded in service provision. It therefore aims to offer support services that enable these communities to access services.

Since its launch, RAAP has successfully held outreach programmes aimed at the local community to encourage community cohesion and integration, and has been involved in the mentoring of local youth to eliminate isolation and promote self confidence and encourage involvement. We have also been working closely with the local councils and GP’s clinics by offering translation and interpreting services.
